Celebrating 75 Years

Last month I finished reading the classic novel
  Gone with the Wind
by Margaret Mitchell.
First published in 1936, the novel broke records by selling 1 million copies in the first six months and was awarded a Pulitzer Prize. This year marks the 75th anniversary.
The book is fantastic to say the least. The character development is absolutely astonishing. I thought I loved the story from watching Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, little did I know how much I really loved the story. More than the story, I love the characters.  Some of my best friends now include Melanie Wilkes, Scarlett O'Hara, Rhett Butler, Prissy, and Mammy. I never really liked Ashley Wilkes. His personality is so weak surrounded by such bold and strong characters. I felt as if I personally knew each character on a deeper level, like I grew up with them. Each character was so vivid in my mind. I cried when they cried and I rejoiced when they rejoiced. We were one.
While reading I found myself saying phrases like "fiddle dee dee", "you handsome devil", and "I can't think about that now, I'll think about that tomorrow". I would think to myself how much I need a Mammy to tell me when I am not being a lady. Mostly I discovered an entire world full of charm, grace, and elegance. A world of gentility and luxury, well at least until the war came. Though even after the war, southern grace still survived in those who really believed in it. It was more than just luxury, it was a way of life. I felt as if I belonged in Scarlett and Melanie's world.
I can't decide who I want to be more like, Melanie or Scarlett. I know, they could not be more opposite. I still want to be like them both and you can't make me choose. And will forever love Rhett Butler for his sly little grin.

This is how I always picture our Scarlett.
Her bold, unwavering face. Such pride and determination. I love her iron will. I love her timeless beauty. I love her undeniable charm. oh and I love her fashion sense.

And this is how I picture Rhett. There is something appealing about the bad boy reputation. He is so ruggedly handsome. I love his wit and his sense of awareness. He can read everyone around him like an open book. He is always two steps ahead of everyone else. I also love his desire/need to spoil Scarlett.

And of course Miss Melanie. Her soft eyes and gentle smile. Don't you feel like this is a portrait of your own Grandmother when she was young? You immediately feel as if you need her to comfort and love you. She is so understanding and caring. She is the person you want to tuck you in at night. She is the essence of true southern hospitality.

When you are in need a good read, go back in time to the Old South. You won't regret it.

Cause after all
Tomorrow is another day...

  1. Hey, I followed the link from facebook :)

I read this last summer and LOVED it!
In the movie, the only actor I wasn't too sold on was Ashley. How can you even compare Ashley to Clark Gable?!

  2. Dallin's favorite as well. Darrin hates it, cuz he can't stand Scarlett. He doesn't understand that is her charm...that we hate her while we love her...secretly...I think he is jealous. Did you know that Grandma Udall (and now I) have Clark Gable's autograph?

  3. So, I just recently watched the movie again. It brought back a memory I have of when we were all in like the 4th grade and your mother drove us out to Phoenix to watch "Gone with the Wind" on the big screen. I don't think I truly appreciated the movie as much then as I do now. It is seriously one of my favorites - maybe it is because your mother planted the seed so many years ago. I think I will pick up the book.
